A stroke is a medical condition in which the blood flow to the brain gets cut off, causing brain cells to die out. The condition is extremely fatal. It has been estimated that almost 50% of the people who have suffered a stroke only live for about a year. Almost 800,000 Americans are said to suffer from stroke every year, the majority of them occurring in people aged 65 years and older.

Risks of Stroke

One of the biggest risk factors of stroke is high blood pressure. It is estimated that around a third of stroke risk is accounted by high BP. If your blood pressure is higher than 140/90, you are at higher risk of being affected. People with heart diseases, defective valves, and clogged arteries have an increased chance of stroke. Those who suffer from diabetes not only have a high risk of a stroke, but the impact of the stroke can be much more severe. In addition to such medical conditions, lifestyle can also increase the risk of stroke. For example, people who smoke tobacco will have a higher chance of suffering strokes than those who don’t smoke. Gender wise, men are likelier to experience strokes than women, but women die from stroke much more than men. In terms of race, African-Americans have been observed to be more likely to suffer a stroke than White Americans.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Stroke

In Ayurveda, there are treatments which are aimed at relieving a person from the effects of stroke like paralysis, weakness or numbness in legs, etc. One of the treatments involves a combination of Basti, Nasya and Shirodhara. In Basti, the person undergoes enema to remove internal toxins. Nasya is a procedure aimed at treating the head, nose, and sinuses. And in Shirodhara, the person is made to lie down and have medicated liquids poured on the forehead. In addition to these, medications like Ashwagandhaaristha, Brahmi Vati, Ashvagandhachurna are also administered. After successful completion of the treatment, the person will feel an improvement from the effects of stroke.

In a study published in 2016, the effects of Ayurveda on treating physical weakness resulting from hemorrhagic stroke were researched. A 50-year-old male test subject was suffering from weakness in the limbs and had difficulty in walking and speaking. The patient was treated with a combination of several procedures like Shirodhara, Basti, Nasya, etc. At the end of the study, the research team concluded that Ayurvedic treatments can be used to provide relief for stroke patients.
