Twak (skin) according to Ayurveda, is a 7 layered sense organ with each layer having its own specific function. All skin diseases in are classified under the heading, Kushta (skin disease). Depending upon the symptoms, doshas involved, tissues affected, they are classified primarily into 2, Mahakushta (severe) and Kshudrakushta (mild). They are further sub divided into 7 and 11 respectively.

Intake of mutually contradictory food like fish and milk or curd, unctuous and heavy drinks,suppression of natural urges,physical exercise in excess hot climate and immediately after taking the food, intake of cold water immediately after the exposure to scorching sun, intake of too much un cooked food and consumption of food before the previous food is digested,excess intake of food items like fresh grains,curd, fish, salt, sour food, black gram, radish, pastry, sesame seeds, milk, jaggery, day sleep, sexual act in the state of indigestion and sinful acts are the reasons for imbalance in physical and physiological constitution and related bodily functions leading to different types of skin diseases. Kushta is a maharoga. It means, it is difficult to cure as deep tissues are involved.
