Psoriasis is a non-contagious, auto immune condition of the skin. It can affect any age group, but mostly seen in adults. It is a chronic condition which can affect different parts of the body, in the form of patches to wide spread lesions all over the body, from scalp to toe. The affected area of skin looks elevated, dry, itchy , scaly and reddish. It usually gets aggravated during winter. Pain medications, certain blood pressure medicines, stress and unwholesome food habits also can aggravate the condition. This condition, when chronic, can also lead to other severe conditions like psoriatic arthritis, lymphomas, cardiovascular diseases, Crohn’s disease and depression.

There are different types of psoriasis depending upon the way it exhibits itself. Some of them areplaque psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis and the erythrodermic psoriasis. Based on the area, size, shape and inflammation, the condition varies.

Plaque Psoriasis

This is the most common type of psoriasis, seen usually in adults and 90% of psoriatic patients come with this condition. It typically presents itself as a reddish elevated skin lesion topped with silvery white scales. The common areas affected are just below and back of the elbow, just below and front of the knee, umbilical area, lower back and scalp. Plaques often hurt and are very itchy. Scratching can lead to bleeding from the lesion.

Guttate Psoriasis

This is a type of psoriasis which affects all age groups including children. The skin lesions in this type resembles a drop. It usually appears on the upper trunk and the proximal extremities. This condition usually starts as an after effect of an upper respiratory tract bacterial infection. The lesions is associated with itching, redness, dryness and scaling on the top. The lesions are usually scattered and are few to sometimes many.

Pustular Psoriasis

This is a rare and severe kind of psoriasis usually seen in adults. It presents with wide spread inflammation of the skin with small pus filled rashes. Palms, soles, fingers and toes are the usual affected parts. It can also affect the whole body but very rarely the face.

Erythrodermis Psoriasis

This is an uncommon and severe type of aggressive psoriasis with extreme inflammation of the skin. Peeling rashes will be there on entire body associated with severe itching and burning sensation.
