This is an injury due to repeat over usage and stress loaded on the tendon that straightens the knee. Pain in front of the knee below the knee cap is the typical symptom. Burning sensation on the knee cap, swelling, painful kneeling and getting up from the squat, reduced range of straightening the knee joint are also symptoms. It begins as an inflammation of the tendon slowly progressing towards degeneration and can, in due course, end up in complete tear of the tendon. Depending upon the symptoms and limitation in the functions, this condition can be graded into 4 stages.

Initial stages of the condition and all the way up to Grade 3 can be managed with Ayurvedic treatments. Grade 4 is complete tendon rupture and needs surgical repair. The Ayurvedic treatments also will prevent arthritic changes which can follow the soft tissue damage in the joint. Application and bandage with specific medicinal powder prepared in herbal decoction, pouring of herbal decoction and medicated oil, bandage with medicated oil and appropriate combination of internal medicines are the usual procedures done in reducing the inflammation. Reduction in inflammation helps in the improvements of circulation to that area leading to the wear and tear repair. Gentle application of Njavara kizhi (Cooked herbal grain coked in milk and in herbal decoction) acts as a hot and cold therapy and also strengthens the structures making them stable. We, at Nagarjuna Ayurvedic centre, treat such condition with speciality medicines developed in our R&D division.
