Muscular dystrophy - Symptoms and causes

Muscular or MD, is a condition where the muscles progressively go through weakness and breaking down. This eventually affects the functions of the limbs or parts of the body, which the affected muscles are made of. There are different types of MD affecting different areas of the body. The most common types are Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy.

As this is due to a genetically disposing factors, there is no cure for this condition. So the management is to delay the progression of muscle weakness and wastage. Ayurvedic medicines and therapies are effective to slow down the process of degeneration and improve the strength and bulk of the muscles.

Gentle massage with herbal powders all over the body (udvarthana), gentle massage all over the body with medicated oils (udsadana), pouring of continuous stream of oil all over the body (pizhichil), gentle massage with poultice made of cooked herbal grain in a mix of decoction and cow’s milk (njavara theppu) are the therapies usually done in rehabilitating the body and affected muscles. Internal medications are given to correct the metabolic fire responsible for conversion of nutrients to muscular tissue and to open the channels connected to locomotor system. In the second phase, therapies and internal medicines are given specifically to improve the muscle strength and bulk.
