Knee is a hinge joint allowing flexion and extension during movement. Four bones, lower end of thigh bone, upper end of two bones on the leg below the knee and the knee cap, join together to form the knee joint. There are kept firm and intact by the strong ligaments in and around the joint. As the knee is a weight bearing joint, these ligaments are made very strong to provide stability. They are collateral ligaments, anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament.

The medial meniscus and lateral meniscus are soft tissue structures. They act as shock absorbers by assisting in load bearing and load transmission. Abnormal movements with high impact on the joint is the common reason for their injury and damage. The damage can be sprain, partial tear, full thickness tear and complete rupture.

Acute pain, swelling, inability to move, instability and hearing of popping sound from the joint are the symptoms usually seen in these cases.

Strain, partial tear of the structures, post-surgical instability and pain can be managed effectively by Ayurvedic treatments. Medicines and therapies to reduce inflammation in and around the damage, improves circulation and thereby leading to natural repair of the wear and tear. This process is followed by medicines and therapies to reinforce and strengthen the normal supporting and damaged structures in and around the joint. Nagarjuna has speciality medicines for internal and external therapies for the management of these conditions. The external therapy material includes medicinal powder, medicated oils and medicated pastes. Gentle massages, pouring of herbal decoction and medicated oils, bandages with medicated paste and oils are the procedures generally done to manage these conditions.

Ayurvedic treatments also will help in prevention of osteo arthritic changes in the knee joint which usually develops as a long term complication as a result of such soft tissue damages
