The pain in and around the knee joint is known as knee pain. The knee is a hinge joint wherein four bones participate to form this joint. Lower end of the thigh bone, upper end of the two bones in the leg and the knee cap are the four bones in the knee joint. These bones are kept intact in its position by the muscles, ligaments and tendons. The smooth movement of the joint is assisted by the synovial fluid, articulating cartilages, air sacks named bursa and the soft structures named meniscus.

Inflammation, injury, strain, wear and tear, infection to any of the above structures can cause pain in and around the knee joint. As the knee is a weight bearing joint, over weight and over use are the most common reasons for pain. Different types of arthritis (Osteo arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Gouty arthritis), tendinitis, bursitis, chondromalacia patella, ligament injuries, meniscus injury, knee cap displacement andiliotibial band syndrome are also seen as some of the other common reasons for knee pain.

Ayurveda offers good treatments to manage such conditions causing knee pain. In many of the cases surgery can be avoided with Ayurvedic treatments. Nagarjuna Ayurvedic centre provides treatments for knee pain using specific and special medicines and oils.
