Psoriasis is a disease in which a person’s skin will be covered with patches of scaly, red tissues. The intensity of the condition can vary, from being limited to a small section of the body to covering the entire body itself. The most common form of this disease is the ‘Psoriasis Vulgaris,’ which is said to be seen in almost 90% of people affected with Psoriasis. Usually, the disease mostly affects the knees, torso, elbows, palm, and scalp. The scaly skin can itch at times and may even bleed. It is estimated that about 7.5 million Americans are affected by Psoriasis.

Causes of Psoriasis

Genetics play a big role in determining whether a person will be affected by Psoriasis. It is estimated that about one in three people suffering from the disease has a family history of Psoriasis. People whose skin have been injured and are on medications also have a higher risk of contracting the disease. Mental stress and emotional trauma can also trigger Psoriasis. HIV positive people can also experience a much more severe Psoriasis condition than those who are HIV negative. There are also lifestyle choices which can put a person at risk of Psoriasis. These include high alcohol consumption, excess weight, increased smoking, etc. And for some people, a change in the season can also trigger the disease. Caucasians are more susceptible to Psoriasis than African Americans.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Psoriasis

Ayurvedic texts mention many remedies for Psoriasis, which it calls as ‘Eka Kushtha.’ Prior to starting a treatment, the bowels are usually cleansed using Eranda Bhrushta Haritaki. Then a dose of Navayasa Rasayana Leha is taken together with a local application of Dhyatradho Lepa. Another remedy will be to use a Medhya Rasayana in conjunction with Dhyatradho Lepa. These treatments are generally carried out for a few months. During this period, people are expected to adhere to the strict rules of diet and behavior in order to get the best effect of the treatment. And subsequently, the effects of psoriasis are said to minimize.

A study was conducted in 2011 to ascertain the effectiveness of Ayurvedic medicines on Psoriasis. About 100 patients participated in the study who were split into two groups and were given various Ayurvedic treatments and medications like Navayasa Rasayana Leha, Medhya Rasayana and so on. Nearly 70% of the participants reported some relief from the effects of Psoriasis, with patients saying that there was a marked improvement in the quality of life, whether it be in their personal relationships or in other daily activities.
