Arthritis - Symptoms and causes

Arthritis is a term often used to refer to discomforts or unhealthy conditions of joints. The discomfort may vary from pain all the way to the involvement of other internal organs too. Pain, stiffness, redness, swelling, warmth in the joints, reduction in movements are the common symptoms seen in different types of arthritis. It usually affects the persons of all age group. The condition can start all of a sudden or develop gradually. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. But the most common types are osteo arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gouty arthritis. Ankylosing spondylosis is another type of arthritis prevalent now a days. Arthritis affects the structures in the joints like bone, cartilages and synovial membrane. The cause can range from mechanical stress and strain, all the way to the effect of some auto immune condition of the body. IF not handled properly in the initial stages, it is mostly progressiveand a life debilitating disease. It not only affects the joints leading to reduction in quality of life, but also can be life threatening by affecting other vital organs.

Ayurvedic approach and management gives excellent results. These conditions can be well managed without pain killers and other interventions. Since this is a degenerative disease, long term management is required for desired results. Modifications in diet and lifestyle plays a vital role in the management.

Ayurveda has classified these diseases under the group, VATA ROGAS. Vata is the prominent and strongest functional principle in the human body responsible for movement. It gets aggravated due to various factors like over activities of body and mind, irregular and reduced sleep, indulgence in un-wholesome and incompatible diet etc. When thus aggravated Vata, along with aggravated Rakta and other Doshas, affects various structures in the joints, different types of arthritis get manifested.
