Ayurvedic Treatment for Sinusitis

Dr.C Manoj Kumar,Chief Physician, Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre Kalady

Sinuses are the air cavities in the skull and facial bones. It is situated, symmetrically, on both the sides of the nose (Maxillary), fore head (Frontal) and behind the nose (Sphenoidal and Ethmoidal). Inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines these sinuses is known as sinusitis. Most common symptoms are thick mucous, head ache and pain around the eyes and nose. If inflammation is severe, then we come across fever too. The condition can repeat due to various reasons including low immunity.

When the condition become chronic, due to repeated episodes, symptoms like heaviness and tightness of head and face, pulsating sensation and heaviness with head ache on bending forward, thick yellow to green mucous, foul smell from the nose and mouth, tiredness, giddiness etc are seen.

When acute, Ayurveda consider this condition as Peenasa and Dushta peenasa, when chronic.

The acute stage of sinusitis can be treated with internal medications. The chronic and repeated episodes have to be treated with Panchakarma. The focus of treatment will be to eliminate the accumulated mucous from the sinuses and to improve general immunity. Application of specific medicated pastes on the face and fore head, application of warm poultice made of certain herbal powders on face, nasal administration of certain medicines as drops into each nostrils (Nasyam) are the procedures usually adopted in the management of chronic sinusitis. As a follow-up, certain medicines have to be continued. To prevent relapse, long term internal medication, regular oil application on vertex, modification in diet and lifestyle will have to be followed.
