All living beings necessarily pass through a series of situations, such as birth, subsistence, degeneration and destruction. Among these phases, the declining or deteriorating one is observed to happen untimely and at a faster rate in certain circumstance. Therefore understanding the cause of this phenomenon and finding and applying remedial measures to arrest it, is a specific form of therapy in Ayurveda known as geriatric care or “Jara Chikitsa”.
The capabilities of man ordinarily achieve maturity around 40 years of age. The degenerative tendencies also begin at this age. The earliest changes of such tendencies can be identified through Ayurveda. The mind remains alert, but the memory power declines; the body finds it difficult to keep pace with the mind. Either the human body should not reach this situation or the speed at which it does so, must be arrested. This is the purpose of “Jarachikilsa” prescribed by Ayurveda Acharayas since time immemorial. Hence it is recommended that after forty years of age one must undergo this therapy at regular intervals.
“Jarachikilsa” is indicated for the following problems; Memory loss, lack of sleep, anger without sufficient provocation, unwarranted obstinacy, lack of attention, dim eye sight, improper hearing, tastelessness, insufficient hunger, constipation, physical weakness, problems of hair and skin, sexual debility, degeneration of joints like knee, neck, back and paralysis. The principle of “Jara chiklisa” is to set right the fundamental bodily processes such as digestion absorption and circulation as well as to maintain them in their healthy condition.
Wrong food and sleeping habits, mental tension, dissatisfied sexual life are all contributory factors to the deterioration process. All these characteristics are equally pertinent to both husband and wife in a family. This is the reason why great importance is accorded in providing “Jara Chikilsa” to husband and wife together .While undergoing the Therapy , the treatment period can also be beneficially utilized for learning to manage tensions and to become acquainted with correct food habits , and life regimen.
During the twilight years of life husband and wife are mutually dependent, more than even before. But this to be realized in a relevant manner, both must remain healthy till the end.
Hence the husband and wife to complement each other must undergo the Ayurvedic “Jara Chikilsa”.
It is axiomatic that the rhythm of life gets adversely affected, if one of the partners falls sick. Then the onus of taking care of the sick partner falls on the shoulder of the other partner, who may become a prey to illnesses, gradually. The “Jara Chikilsa at Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre is designed in such a way that while providing treatment to the sick partner, specific treatments are provided to the other partner who is not ill.
